Aromatherapy is the practice of using the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being. The use of essential oils for therapeutic, spiritual, hygienic and ritualistic purposes goes back to a number of ancient civilizations including the Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans which can be traced back more than 3,500 years.

The nature of an essential oil varies from plant to plant, within botanical families, and from species to species. The delicate ratio of aromatic constituents found in any given essential oil are what make it unique and give it specific benefits.

Even with pure essential oils the composition of the oil can vary depending on the time of day, season, geographic location, method and duration of distillation, year grown, and the weather, making every step of the production process a critical determinant of the overall quality of the essential oil product.

It typically mixed with other substances like oil, alcohol, or lotion, then applied to the skin, sprayed into the air, or inhaled.  The inhaled aroma from these essential oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. It is thought by scientists that the activity of the nerve signal passing through this region causes mood change by altering brain chemistry. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing.

The scents and the therapeutic capacities of each essential oil are unique to each plant and can have many physiological and psychological benefits. The oils have the ability to calm and release stress, to uplift depression, to stimulate and awaken the body and mind, to relieve sore muscles, or even loosen a cough.

Aromatherapy balances the disturbances within your body and mind, and fortifies your weaknesses, allowing your body to heal itself and since the oils have anti-viral, anti-fungal and antibacterial qualities within the plants, we as humans can also make use of these benefits for our own health when used properly.
